The Conservation Team is symbolic, depicting a group that will undertake efforts to conserve the natural ecology of Redang Island. When Redang Island is mentioned, we are well aware that it has been proclaimed as one of the marine parks in Malaysia under the Malaysian Department of Fisheries (DOF). Therefore, all activities involving coral reefs must obtain approval and permission from the DOF.
We have obtained approval from the DOF to carry out a project for coral restoration activities in the Redang Island Marine Park. According to project requirements, we need to demonstrate that the restoration techniques and methods we bring can produce healthy and abundant coral nubbins. If this method succeeds, we will be granted a larger area to conduct restoration activities.
Our team will consistently engage in coral restoration work under the monitoring and supervision of the DOF to ensure compliance with the stipulated terms and conditions. Therefore, for us, this represents the conservation team responsible for technical work in coral restoration, supported by the preservation team, as without the preservation team, this project would not be sustainable.
The Preservation Team consists of participants from the tourism industry players and visitors. The tourism industry participants encompass accommodation providers (resorts, hotels, homestays, chalets, and campsites), boat operators, and tourism agencies.
This collective has directly benefited from eco-tourism, and it’s well understood that this has had an unfavorable impact on the coral reef ecosystem. They must comprehend the significance and be willing to assume a heightened responsibility in conserving the coral reef ecosystem, as its deterioration could adversely affect this industry.
Specifically addressing prospective, current, and past visitors to Redang Island, you must possess a heightened awareness and a profound sense of responsibility in nurturing the natural ecology, ensuring that this natural balance can continue to be enjoyed in the times to come.
We bring solutions that can provide sustainability for the long term.
How it’s work?
Taking coral colonies using the coral transplant method. This method aims to select healthy coral colonies to be used as coral nubbin.
Producing coral nubbin through the coral fragmentation method, where healthy coral colonies are cut into small fragments to be cultivated on nursery tables.
There are 10 coral nursery tables that have been filled with coral nubbin to meet the project’s requirements. Each table has been filled with 200 coral nubbins and 2,000 coral nubbins for 10 tables.
The coral nubbin production activity will be monitored and supervised by the Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF) to ensure compliance with each procedure.
Project progress reports need to be submitted every 2 months to ensure that all subsequent activities meet the department’s requirements.
The awareness program, to be conducted in collaboration with tourism industry players, aims to directly engage with visitors.
Information about the responsibilities of each visitor will be disseminated to all industry players.
Briefings and awareness activities at the project site are conducted for visitors to make them aware that every action they made has its own consequences.
These activities need to be carried out to ensure the continuous progress of the project (feasibility). Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities with corporate companies are crucial to ensure that each phase of this project, especially the monitoring and maintenance phase, can be effectively executed.
If each team fulfills their respective roles according to the guidelines set forth in the master plan, we believe this project will provide sustainability for all parties, including authorities, tourism industry players, the community, visitors, and most importantly, the natural ecology.
This project boasts a high level of feasibility as we do not need to compete with anyone, and all visitors to Redang Island have a high probability of participating in our activities.
Without collaborative efforts, how can sustainability can be achieved
